The Australian PR Dream: A Realistic Guide for Nepali Graduates

Permanent residency in Australia is achievable for Nepali graduates who plan strategically. However, it requires understanding the points-based system, choosing the right course and occupation, and maximizing your points score. This guide breaks down the entire process.

Step 1: Complete Your Studies and Get the 485 Visa

After completing your Australian qualification, apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). Duration:

  • Bachelor's degree: 2 years
  • Masters by coursework: 2-3 years
  • Masters by research: 3 years
  • PhD: 4 years
  • Regional study bonus: additional 1-2 years

The 485 visa gives you full work rights in Australia while you prepare your PR application.

Step 2: Get a Skills Assessment

You need a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for your occupation. Common ones for Nepali graduates:

  • ACS (Australian Computer Society) — for IT occupations
  • Engineers Australia — for engineering occupations
  • ANMAC — for nursing
  • CPA/CAANZ — for accounting
  • VETASSESS — for many other occupations

The assessment verifies that your qualification and experience match the occupation requirements. It typically takes 2-3 months and costs AUD 400-1,000.

Step 3: Calculate Your Points Score

The General Skilled Migration system uses a points-based approach. You need a minimum of 65 points, but competitive scores are typically 80-90+.

  • Age: 25-32 years = 30 points (maximum)
  • English: IELTS 8.0 or PTE 79 = 20 points; IELTS 7.0/PTE 65 = 10 points
  • Australian qualification: Bachelor's/Masters = 15 points; PhD = 20 points
  • Australian work experience: 1 year = 5 points; 3 years = 10 points; 5 years = 15 points
  • Overseas work experience: 3 years = 5 points
  • Study in regional Australia: 5 points
  • Professional year: 5 points (for accounting, IT, engineering)
  • Community language (NAATI): 5 points
  • State nomination (190 visa): 5 points
  • Spouse/partner skills: 5-10 points

Step 4: Submit Expression of Interest (EOI)

Create your EOI in SkillSelect, choosing one or more visa types:

  • Subclass 189 (Independent): No sponsor needed. Occupation must be on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Most competitive — highest point scores required.
  • Subclass 190 (State Nominated): State government nominates you. Adds 5 points to your score. Each state has different occupation lists and requirements.
  • Subclass 491 (Regional Provisional): Regional nomination. Leads to PR after 3 years of living and working in regional Australia. Lower point requirements.

Step 5: Receive Invitation & Apply

If your points score is competitive, you receive an invitation to apply for the visa. You then have 60 days to submit a full application with police clearances, health examination, and all supporting documents.

Popular PR Occupations for Nepali Graduates

  • Software Engineer / Developer: High demand, ACS assessment, good salary
  • Registered Nurse: Critical shortage, ANMAC assessment, fastest PR pathway
  • Civil / Mechanical / Electrical Engineer: EA assessment, strong demand
  • Accountant: CPA assessment, requires professional year
  • Chef / Cook: VETASSESS assessment, good for TAFE graduates
  • Social Worker: Growing demand, AASW assessment

Timeline

Realistic PR timeline for a Nepali Masters graduate:

  • Complete 2-year Masters: Month 0
  • Apply for 485 visa: Month 1
  • Skills assessment: Months 2-4
  • Achieve English score: Months 3-6
  • Gain 1 year work experience: Month 12
  • Submit EOI: Month 12-14
  • Receive invitation: Month 14-18
